Pacaya Samiria was declared National Reserve in 1982. It has an extention of 2’080,000 hectares and it is the second largest protected area in Peru. The reserve is the habitat of about 1,025 species of fauna, some threatened, such as the Black Caiman (Melanosuchus niger), the Amazonian Manatee (Trichechus inunguis), the Pink River Dolphin (Inia geoffrensis) and the Jaguar (Panthera onca).
